It is tempting to get outside on the first mild day of the season and start turning over the garden beds. But digging or tilling soil that is still saturated from winter rain or snowmelt is one of the fastest ways to damage its structure. When you work wet ground, the pressure of your tools, boots, or tiller compacts the soil into dense clumps. As those clumps dry, they turn hard and lumpy, making it difficult for roots, air, and water to move through the bed. That compaction can linger for the entire growing season.
