Before you move soil, clean a gutter, or buy any materials, take a slow walk around your entire property. The goal is not to fix anything yet; it is simply to observe how water behaves on your land. Heavy rain follows the path of least resistance, and that path is shaped by your yard’s natural contours.

Start by noting the slope of the ground immediately next to your foundation. In most cases, the earth should angle away from the house so runoff does not sit against the walls. Look for where that slope flattens out or, worse, dips inward. Even a modest depression close to the siding can become a collection point during a downpour.

Pay attention to low spots farther out in the yard as well. These are not always obvious when the ground is dry. Look for patches of thinner grass, slight discoloration, or lines of debris that suggest water has crossed that area before. Also, check where your downspouts discharge. Trace the path that water takes from each outlet, and see whether it flows toward a drain, a swale, or directly back toward the house.

Finally, consider the bigger picture:

  • Neighboring properties: Does runoff from an uphill lot naturally cross your yard?
  • Hard surfaces: Driveways, patios, and walkways can channel water faster than grass.
  • Existing drainage: Note any dry wells, French drains, or surface channels and whether their outlets are clear.

Do not dig or alter anything yet. This observation pass simply gives you a mental map. Once you know where water gathers and how it moves, you can prioritize the work that matters most—and avoid wasting effort on areas that stay dry no matter the forecast.

Gutters and Downspouts: The First Line of Defense

Before heavy rain arrives, the most direct step you can take is to make sure the path from your roof to the ground is clear. Gutters and downspouts exist to move water away from the house, but they only work if nothing is in the way. Start by looking up from the ground. If you see visible sagging between hangers, that section is likely holding water instead of shedding it. Cracks, rust spots, or separated seams are also easy to spot from a ladder check or binoculars.

Blockages are the most common issue. Leaves, twigs, and granules from older asphalt shingles collect over the season. You can clean accessible gutters by hand with a trowel and a bucket, and flush the downspouts with a garden hose to confirm water runs freely. This is a safe, routine task if you have a sturdy ladder and someone nearby to spot you. If the roof line is high, the ground is uneven, or you are uncomfortable on a ladder, this is a job to hand off to a professional.

Once the gutters are clear, check the downspouts. They should direct water several feet away from the foundation. If they empty right at the base of the wall, add a flexible extension or a splash block to move the discharge distance. Also inspect the strap or bracket holding each downspout to the wall; a loose one will pull away under the weight of water.

  • Clear debris when it collects, not just once before the season.
  • Look for water stains on siding or fascia board beneath gutter joints.
  • Check the ground where downspouts discharge; erosion or standing water indicates a problem.

Sagging, large cracks, or gutters pulling away from the roofline are beyond a simple cleaning. These conditions usually warrant repair or replacement, and a professional can assess whether the slope is correct for proper drainage.

Inspect Roof and Flashing for Leaks

Before the first heavy storm arrives, take a slow walk around your home and look up. From the ground, use a pair of binoculars to scan the roofline for shingles that are visibly missing, cracked, or curling at the edges. Curled or buckled shingles are often a sign that they have reached the end of their service life or that attic ventilation is poor. You can also look for bare spots where granules have worn away, leaving the asphalt exposed. Any of these conditions make it easier for wind-driven rain to work its way under the surface.

Pay special attention to the flashing—the thin metal strips installed where the roof meets a vertical surface. Check around chimneys, plumbing vents, and skylights. From the ground, look for rust, gaps, or sections of flashing that have pulled away from the wall or roof. Also, check the sealant around these areas; cracked or missing caulk is a common entry point for water. A dark streak or stain below a flashing joint can mean water has been running behind the metal rather than over it.

What you can do safely:

  • Inspect from the ground or a second-story window using binoculars.
  • Look for debris, such as leaves or branches, collecting in valleys or around vents.
  • Note the location of any suspicious spots so you can describe them to a professional.

Leave to a professional: Any climbing onto the roof, lifting shingles, replacing flashing, or sealing with roofing cement. Roof surfaces are slippery when damp, and the risk of falling is not worth a short visual check. A licensed roofer can also identify hidden damage that is not visible from the ground.

Check Windows, Doors, and Foundation Cracks

Before the first heavy storm, take a slow walk around your home’s exterior and interior. Start with the seals around windows and doors. Over time, the caulk and weatherstripping that keep water out can dry out, shrink, or pull away from the frame. Look closely at the corners and along the bottom edges where water tends to collect. Gaps that let in a visible draft on a windy day will almost certainly let in water under driving rain.

Inside, run your hand along the edges of closed windows and doors to feel for air movement. Check the condition of the caulk itself: if it feels stiff, crumbles when pressed, or has gaps where it meets the siding or frame, it is due for replacement. For weatherstripping, look for flattened, torn, or missing sections. These are straightforward, seasonal repairs you can often handle on a dry afternoon with basic materials.

Next, examine the foundation, both outside and from the basement or crawl space. You are looking for two things:

  • New cracks that were not there a season or two ago.
  • Existing cracks that appear wider at the top than at the bottom, seeping moisture, or actively growing.

Hairline cracks in poured concrete or masonry are common as a house settles and are not automatically a problem. However, when water is the concern, any crack you can fit the edge of a coin into deserves attention. Small, isolated surface gaps can be sealed with a quality exterior-grade caulk or masonry patching compound, following the product’s directions carefully. Do not attempt to fill a crack that is actively leaking water or shows signs of structural movement, such as a stair-step pattern in block walls, bowing, or displacement between sections. That work requires a foundation contractor or structural engineer, who can determine the cause and the appropriate fix before rain adds pressure to the problem.

Evaluate Drainage and Grading Around the Home

Look for puddles that remain more than a day, dark streaks on the foundation walls, or soil that feels spongy underfoot. These are signs that water is not moving away as it should.

The basic principle is simple: the ground should slope away from your house for a good distance in every direction. You can check this visually by setting a long, straight board on the ground and using a level, or simply by watching where a cup of water poured on the soil runs. If water heads back toward the siding or settles against the base, you have a grading problem.

Start with the easiest fixes yourself:

  • Downspout extensions: Sometimes the issue is just that downspouts dump water right at the foundation. Attach a flexible or rigid extension to carry the flow farther out onto the lawn.
  • Low spots: You can fill small depressions near the house with compacted topsoil. This is a weekend job for many homeowners.
  • Mulch and flower beds: Raised beds that sit higher than the adjacent soil can trap water against the wall. Consider pulling soil away so the bed edge slopes down and away.

Leave bigger jobs to a professional. If you have water entering a basement or crawl space, or if the ground has settled so much that you need to bring in significant fill, call a landscaping or excavation contractor. They can measure the actual slope, recommend regrading, and install a French drain or curtain drain along the foundation. Major excavation and underground pipe work involves permits, utility lines, and proper compaction—not a job for a shovel and a weekend.

Addressing drainage now means less chance of a wet basement, foundation cracks, or eroded soil when the skies open up.

Test Sump Pump and Backup Systems

Your sump pump is the primary defense against groundwater entering your basement during heavy rain. Testing it before a storm arrives is a straightforward task that can prevent a costly flood. Begin by unplugging the pump and removing the cover from the basin. Use a small scoop or a wet/dry vacuum to clear out any debris, gravel, or sediment that has settled at the bottom. A clean pit lets the float switch move freely and reduces wear on the pump itself.

To test the pump, pour a few buckets of clean water into the pit until the float rises and the motor kicks on. Watch to confirm that the pump drains the water down to the normal low level and then shuts off on its own. While it runs, walk outside and check the discharge line—the pipe that carries water away from your foundation. Make sure the end is clear of leaves, mud, or a kinked hose, and that water is exiting at least several feet from the house.

If the pump does not turn on, runs continuously, or makes unusual noises, do not attempt to repair the motor yourself. Call a licensed plumber or electrician, depending on whether the issue appears to be plumbing or wiring related.

  • Check the discharge pipe for a frozen or blocked end before cold season arrives.
  • Consider a battery-backed sump pump or a portable generator to keep the pit working during an outage.
  • Replace a worn or old pump proactively if it has visible rust, cracks, or a sluggish response during testing.

A pump that fails during a storm often surfaces too late. Testing now gives you time to arrange a professional repair without the pressure of rising water.
